Some More Christmas Spirit

-Sarah just handed me a Christmas CD - how wonderful. I just now picked up a big thick book (looks like it came from CostCo) called 'Ideals Christmas and Holiday Cookbook' with big festive photographs. oh i love Christmas all year round. I love the smell of apple cider with cinnamon simmering on the stove. I love Celine Dion playing so loud you can't hear the phone ring. I love picking off the pine needles on the tree that look too dead to stay on. I love the funny mornings with Mum, Dad, and Cathy. I love the cherry crèpes, i love the raisin tarts, i love all the hugs and tears and chilled atmosphere. I love the 'traditions' that have entwined themselves into my Christmas every year.

-I am so full of joy.

-The other day i walked into Shopright and they were playing English Christmas Carols... so loudly! like you know when you're closing everything down in a store and you turn up the music super loudly so that people will get the hint and leave? that's how loud it was, only the store wasn't closing. And there was a man stocking the shelves and he was singing SO loudly in his Malagasy pronounced English carols, so many people were laughing hysterically and he knew it and looked like he was having the time of his life.

-I love laughing, i love life.

Teacher, Teacher, Teacher!

Last night I was uncomfortably awake for the majority of the night, tossing and turning because of the nausea, after throwing up heaps early this morning I am feeling much better. It helps that I ‘called in sick’ today, and am staying at home in bed making up stories in my mind and relaxing.

One of the things my class is doing today (sadly without me) is watching James and the Giant Peach (the one co-produced by Tim Burton), I finished reading it to them on Monday. I enjoy Roald Dahl’s writing very much. I don’t know how many of them understood what was going on in the book. Because for all of the students, English is either their 2nd, 3ed, 4th, or 5th learned language, so their English comprehension is quite different from the average 4th grader in Canada.

We often learn new words that come up in subject work, books, etc. After we discuss the word I encourage the children to try and incorporate that new ‘word’ into their oral and written communication with one another and myself. They often use a new verb as a noun, or don’t fully comprehend the word so it is difficult to understand what they are trying to say, but they get props for trying : )

This week, one of the new words was ‘influence’. This came up the other day when we were learning about the 7 year old king Joash in the Old Testament, and discussing how important good influences would have been in his life. Every single student needed to give examples of who had been a good influence and a bad influence in their lives… some of it was hilarious, some of it was sad. Unfortunately not everybody understood how to properly use the word in a sentence. For example ‘A bad guy bad influence devil.’, or ‘She is a stealer influence’… my oh my, my frustration with the difficulty in ‘teaching’ the English language peaked months ago. However I still have many frustrations, and days when I feel like I’m drowning in inadequacy of trying to help someone to grasp a concept. Although I no longer feel as rushed. Regarding lack of understanding, I can usually smile, sometimes laugh and think ‘this is cute’… but when it’s the same question for the 100th time from the same student, I need to practice my deep breathing skills I learnt back in grade 5. Seriously, for anybody praying for patience, I strongly suggest you look into teaching for at LEAST 6 months. You would be a changed person; more patient, little more fulfilled, and exhausted, or bitter, cynical, and exhausted.

Teachers, I love you. Kids of all ages, cultures, languages have a huge variety of learning difficulties, and attention disorders, not to mention a whole whackload of unstable homes to add… Imagine being the primary caregiver (8 hours a day, 5 days a week) of apx 20 children for 10 months out of the year! I greatly admire people who work passionately in their career choice of being a teacher. Huge thank you’s to my past teachers, with whom my respect for escalates on a daily basis. Imagine… teaching for 25 years! Agh, I’m sure I’d die after 3 of stress. Some people say it gets easier as the years go on, and I don’t doubt that in certain areas of teaching (preperation, methods of teaching, subject material, organization, etc). However what I consider to be heart of teaching, children, is constantly changing. Imagine a work environment where the heart of your career is CONSTANTLY(I don’t just mean week by week, but minute by minute) being stretched and poked and prodded.

Money can NOT be the reason teachers become teachers, benefits perhaps, but not money. I believe the majority of the teachers choose this as a career because it is their passion to make a difference in the life of a child. To plant seeds of wisdom and true education into the minds and hearts of the future leaders of our world. Yes, I know this sounds cliché, and maybe even a bit lame, but I am just thinking about how the elementary and high school teachers of Barak Obama must be feeling right now. I wonder how many lives doctors have saved, how many grass roots peace organizations have been started, how many writers have inspired new hope… none without a small seed of one of their past teachers. So for you teachers, I wish I could give you a hug, ten GOOD Educational Assistants, a paid holiday once every month and a half, a work environment free of gossip and malice, and a super booster injection of patience, energy, love, and wisdom.

At 22 years old, I find myself teaching grade 4’s all subject in English... in the French speaking country of Madagascar. Nobody in my family knows a word of French. So my ability to do every day things here such as taking a bus, asking for help, speaking with the parents of my students, or even ordering a pizza, is completely dependent on my French language skills which I owe entirely to my elementary and high school teachers in Dawson Trail School turned Ecole Lorette Immersion, and then later on in College Lorette Collegiate. In Malagasy they would say Misotra Beteka, Thank you very much, Merci beaucoup.

Stupid Bugs and a Wonderful Weekend

I just found myself saying ‘Well you should die too seeing as all of your brothers are dead you will find no pleasure in life, and you will feel awfully full and probably extremely guilty after digesting your dead brothers and sisters.’ Please environment & animal/insect loving friends, don’t judge my actions until you too have been woken up from a Sunday afternoon nap because of a very quiet, odd sound, and you realize that it’s about 30ish giant biting ants running around and munching on the cockroach that you had killed earlier when you were half asleep… I did the only thing that would make me feel at peace- sprayed the bundle of them with RAID until I could feel it in my lungs. I watched their little bodies wiggle and squirm in pain, I believe they suffered greatly for about 30 seconds, I thought I felt guilty enough about killing all of them that I would never pick up the RAID again, but then I saw an ant that got away, and I’d be lying if I said I did NOT get immense satisfaction when I stepped on him.

I have a great many bites on my body; fleas, mosquitos, flies, ants, spiders… I don’t know! Many different kinds and it is all the more apparent now that i have shaved my legs (for the 2nd time since my arrival 3 months ago), it’s annoying, but thankfully I found some kind of cream (I don’t know what its called, everything is written in some kind of not nice sounding European language) to smother my bites in, and it soothes the itchiness.

Ah, I am SO thankful that I have a bed off the floor, woo hoo!

I just wanted to share that I had a wonderful weekend : ) Colleen, Georgina, and Sarah were all away house-sitting different houses (not that I don’t enjoy their company, it was just different), and Ella came over. Ella is a lady I met a while back, and we’ve wanted to get together but things just didn’t happen… but this weekend she came over for the whole weekend, woo hoo 2 slumber parties in a row : ) On Friday I made some kind of delicious pizza creation, and Ella, Tania and I enjoyed pizza, good talks and then we watched Napolean Dynamite. Ella also enjoys music immensely, and we spent many hours this weekend just relaxing listening to songs… that’s when you know you’re meant to be friends hey? She’s a blast, we headed into town and walked around and when we found ourselves caught in the rain we wondered into a French Cultural Center where they are doing an exposition on the UN’s top 20 or 30 Human Rights – we ended up watching a French Documentary about the migration of birds from all around the world (it was a nice encouragement to not eat meat). Ella doesn’t speak French (she is from Indonesia, so she speaks Indonesian, and English), but that was just fine because there was almost no talking at all.

This weekend God gave me an awesome new friend, and provided me with the means to buy 3 kilograms of lychees. God is good…. (and now you say)

ALL THE TIME! (I’ve kind of being going through a phase where it seems like most everything is futile, and I’m not quite out of it yet, but His goodness and grace never fails me)

This was perhaps not very interesting for most of you to read, but I thought my parents and maybe church might like to hear that I am making friends and enjoying myself out here and maybe somebody else would like to hear about it too!

I am seeing myself turn Perfect, almost.

It’s midnight and I am awake. Why oh why? Four and a half hours past my bedtime and the wheels in my brain are turning, my heart is thumping and I have so much energy I could dance circles around Michael Jackson.

I thought maybe I was hungry for food, so I ate a mango. Strangely enough, the most delicious food in the world did not impede this growing hunger for something in my body. The mango didn’t do it, neither did brushing my teeth, neither did praying, so I find myself writing and trying to unravel this energy.

No matter where I am in the world, no matter who I am with, I find myself in seasons where I find myself at a complete loss of understanding in what is going on! In these seasons I feel as if I am outside of this life I am living, and not apathetic, but I feel as if I am so far from away from what my hands are touching and my eyes are seeing. I feel as if I am to be observing myself and learning, and then when I am put back into my body I will be full of convictions and then I will learn from all my observations of my mistakes, and I will be PERFECT! So this is me looking from outside my body, and at the end of this blog entry, I will be perfect, and you will get to witness this… lucky you, you get to watch me turn into a beautiful butterfly : )

In April I went to a ‘retreat’ for 4 days at St. Benadict’s Monastary just North of Winnipeg. It was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life! Complete stillness in peaceful quiet can bring such an unimaginable serenity. Imagine eating delicious food in community with nuns and people you have never seen before… only there are no words spoken, nobody asks you questions, nobody tells stories, nobody says a word. From 5AM – noon every day was silent retreat. They have an ART room full of HUGE cupboards full of a mix of various art supplies that are there for you to use, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They have a small room with a record player, cd player, a lazyboy, and candles. They have a room with a big piano and some couches and candles. They have a chapel/sanctuary with candles going any time of day. Their motto for the weekend was;

That was back in April (2008).

This past Saturday I was heading home from town and because of the traffic I took a taxi rather than a bus. The taxi driver’s name was Herve, he is from Madagascar but went to school in France and thankfully he was able to understand my brutal French dialect and we were able to converse. It’s funny that he brought up the pace of life in Madagascar, how ‘chill’ it is. He said it’s difficult, but relaxed.

Today is Monday this means I teach extra school lessons to four Grade 4 students after school for one hour. Then if I’m lucky (just a figure of speech, I don’t believe in ‘luck’), Anna’s dad will pick her up in their SUV and will drive me to Jocelyn’s house where I go for supper and then later we go to bible study together. Today though it was Anna’s mother who picked her up (but still in a vehicle rather than a moped). It was the first time I had met her mother. She also spoke excellent French and offered me a ride, and I excitedly took her up on it. We talked on the way to Joce’s, and oddly enough, she TOO brought up the ‘chilled’ pace of life here. Hmmm… I am beginning to shed my cocoon.

Today the Bible study was about gentleness. How we need to take the time to bind wounds (no matter how old they are!), but at this busy pace of life the majority of us are used to, we do not take the time to wrap up and encourage healing to these wounds... and it will be impossible for us to be whole.

God clicked this in my brain today. It’s been a re-occuring theme since my time spent in St Benadicts this past April. ‘Just BE, and fall in love with ME!’… I think that if this is the only thing I learn this year… traveling so far from home, away from friends and family… it’s worth it : ) (although I kinda wish I wasn’t so thick-headed, so I’d learn quicker!).

Wow look at me, I am a beautiful perfect butterfly!

Oh the time has come, I am returning to my body. My eyelids are feeling like heavy weights I am struggling to keep from closing, my muscles are aching and I don’t really FEEL like a beautiful perfect butterfly, I feel more like an exhausted, flea bitten, 22 year old. Actually, I think I’m 23, it crossed my mind the other day I actually don’t remember my age. It doesn’t matter I guess, who really cares how old a perfect butterfly is ; )

Short Stories Part 2

Improving Tears

Every Friday is ‘Test day’. We will always have a spelling test and one or two others (either Math, or English Comprehension, or Biblical Studies). The children have a ‘Test File’ (which I would call a Test Binder… but they are unfamiliar with the word ‘binder’ out here) in which they keep all of their tests from the beginning of the year. Every Monday they receive back their corrected tests from the previous week, they put their corrected tests in their test file, and they bring their test file home and their tests must be signed by their parent. I like this… as it makes the parent aware of some academic standings of their child and sometimes they are more active in helping at home, furthermore it prepares them for the marks on report cards.

However… two weeks ago there was a bug in the routine (AHH!). We had had a Spelling and a Math Test, and I did not correct them over the weekend! Consequently, the children did not get them on the Monday like usual, and I decided to wait until the following Monday with their ‘new tests’… so not to disrupt the ‘routine’ so much : ) Nonetheless I wanted to congratulate some of the students on their marks, and send them into the weekend with a good feeling… This is also part of our ‘routine’; before I hand back the tests I congratulate any students who received 100%, and any students who made great improvement, then we all clap and cheer for each student.

WELL (this is the part of the story that actually matters) this Friday morning, I announced the results of the Spelling Tests (those who got 100%, there were no ‘great improvements’ this time in Spelling), and of the Math Tests; One of the students got 100% on his Math test, we all clapped and cheered for him, and he jumped up. And then I said there was somebody who made a wonderful improvement after all of his hard work, and we discussed what improvement meant so that everybody would understand, and I said I am so proud of this person and we needed to really encourage them. Then a student who I will call Micky (who would absolutely steal your heart if you got to hang out with him for a big) puts his head on his desk and cries out ‘OH its NEVER going to be me!’.. he is a student who receives about 10%-60% on tests & assignments. I continued and said ‘And the student who was most improved with 84% is MICKY!!” And seriously, the ENTIRE class jumped up, and Micky’s face was priceless, he first put his head down on the table, and people were on top of him hugging him, and when he got up I saw his face was wet with tears, he had so many ‘Good job Micky’s!’ and ‘Congratulations’. It brought tears to my eyes.

It’s moments like this when I am so happy and thank God I am able to see Him in life like this. It’s moments like this that I think I wouldn’t change a thing to be here, and see those tears of joy on Micky’s face.

I am not a veggie burger, but I should be.

Ever since that incident with the convulsing pig (read Short Stories Part 1), and seeing the way they treat their animals out here (no worse than at home, just more visible), and all the diseases that must be sitting on that blood in which the dead animals are sitting in with all the insects waiting for somebody to purchase it… well, ever since all that was sitting in my mind I stopped eating meat. I just couldn’t do it, I began having dreams and seriously felt convicted. If I am invited to somebody’s house for a meal they have prepared, and their main dish is meat, I will eat it, and try not to think of animals or diseases. I have done this once in the past couple of months – some mince meat in lasagna. And then again last night at Jaco and Ilca’s, he had prepared BBQ’d bits of steak and chicken on ‘shish-kabobs’ (what do you call them?), I ate some and it was delicious, but my stomach still feels bad the morning after… and the conversation around the table didn’t help either… Walking to their house two people had seen a dog’s paw (Just the paw, no dog!) lying on the road, but didn’t point it out, but talk about it was enough to make my stomach turn.

Moral of the Story: Next time you’re eating meat, think of that puppy’s paw chopped off lying in the middle of a road.I am not a veggieburger/tarian, but I should be, and so should you. Ah, there I go imposing my ‘personal beliefs’ on someone, oh no!

Ms Lisa & punishment

Some days I think ‘The only thing that this kid is going to understand is a beating!’, so then I calmly get packing tape, and I put it on his mouth, then I ask him to lock his fingers together and I tape his hands up, then I put packing tape around him and the back of his chair and he sits there unable to move, play with things, jump up, and talk… Keep him like this for 2 periods and he’s sure to behave, and if he forgets, all I need to do is put the packing tape around my arm as I am talking. Also he doesn’t leave the class, so he won’t miss any discussions or teachings, I strongly suggest this as a disciplinary method if it won’t compromise your job. I don’t think I’d get much joy out of beating a child, actually, I don’t think I could do it no matter how much he irritates me, but taping up a kid – yes, their eyes get bigger when they are unable to open their mouth, like a cool bug, it’s cute.

WISHLIST

MY MOM IS COMING OUT HERE TO MADAGASCAR AND WILL BE ARRIVING DECEMBER 26^TH!!! Oh Christmas with family, how exciting! I am so happy, and don’t actually think I have ever looked forward to something as much as this. Just my Mum and I… oh how wonderful.

A few people have mentioned they would like to maybe send some things along with her, and to send a ‘wish list’. I am very happy about this, so I have composed a list after speaking with different teachers in the School, so you might have a list of items needed directly from the teachers who are with the children every day and truly feel the need for such items. Also there is a separate ‘wish list’ at the bottom, which is quite a selfish bit… in sense that I will most likely be the only one to benefit from such things.

This is a WISH list... key word: WISH

Meaning, in my perfect ‘vision valley’ world we would have all these supplies. But I do not expect all this, just throwing it out there, because I can’t hope unless I put it into the hands of those who are able. Maybe you are able… I put a tiny piece of my gigantic hopes in your hands ; )

If you are interested in sending any of these things along with my Mom, please talk with her (you may reach her at robirek@mts.net ), so she can organize it with space, and to make sure no 2 people are giving the same thing. Also if there are ANY QUESTIONS at all about any of the items on this list, PLEASE do not hesitate to contact me at invitation_2understanding@hotmail.com. Please be aware that I usually check my email once a week, and if I get an email with a question from you I then need to go find the answer, and then I can get back to you the following week… meaning about a 2 week waiting period, and if this is not sufficient, please speak with my Mum, and she can call me to find out and I get back to you a lot quicker : )

Please note a few things before you read this ‘Wish List’:

* Vision Valley School (where I work) has 152 students in it, ranging in ages from 3 – 16 (Pre-primary – grade 10.. but will eventually reach grade 12 eldest class grows). Class sizes range from 9 – 19 & teacher.

*I originally came out here to be the Art teacher for all grades. I know that the subject of Art is seen by many individuals as being quite silly, and why in the world would you half way across the world to ‘Teach Art’. I see art in many different forms; Film, drama, painting, sketching, singing, making music using a variety of home made and already made instruments, etc. I believe creation AND interpretation are very important to individuals, especially children. Many children have great difficulties in other subjects, Maths, English, Science, but excel in art simply because there is really no ‘wrong’ in art, and as long as they put in effort, and are able to gradually become more vulnerable in the art leading to the best representation of some truth they do beautifully. This bestows a confidence that I know first hand can be a beautiful form of healing. It’s awesome to ‘do Art’ using a pencil and a piece of a paper, and I know you could spend months playing around with different methods of drawing, however … the majority of kids get bored (so do I, as it is not a particular passion of mine), and when they are not enjoying the art form, they cease to create anything of any meaning. Now you may have an idea of where I am coming from when creating this list : )

* Things like pencils, pencil sharpeners, markers, glue, scissors, rulers, geometry sets…. We can get all those things here and very good prices so they are not needed.

*Please keep in mind that the majority of the educational supplies we have in Manitoba, are extremely Westernized, but we rarely notice it unless we have a child from a different nationality, or somebody points it out. I don’t want to be picky, but if there is a choice between two items in which one has extensive information on the history of Canada, or ‘famous’ landmarks in the U.S…. and the other option is quite a bit more broader but does not go into such immense details about the United States or Canada.. wonderful (Please keep this mind especially for atlases). PLEASE, I don’t mean to be picky, and am already just so grateful that people have shown interest in this, and will be extremely grateful for whatever item(s) reach it out here, it is just something to keep in mind…

*Other than the requests for stickers & paper, please try and make the wisest decisions and be sure there are no perishable items coming aboard.

*The pre-primary (ages 3-5) section is supervised by a beautiful friend – Colleen. Colleen was a teacher in South Africa for 11 years before she came here 2 years ago and has made a long-term commitment to living and working here for Vision Valley School. I have spoken with her, and asked her the needs of this section. It might sound a bit odd, but this section is in desperate need of ‘STUFF’… picture 3 year olds playing all day with their hands, rocks, and maybe some books… they need ‘STUFF’! So if you read some of these things and think … can’t they just use their imaginations and make some of those things out of material they find, or whatnot. Well, I think most of you know I have no problems using the ‘creative’ side of my brain, but these are things that we are unable to have because of lack of supplies/funds/ability.

-Powder paints (LOTS, many different colors): There are absolutely NO powder paints on this entire island! They do have small tubes of acrylic and watercolor paints, but they are far too expensive to buy in large quantities for the classes to paint anymore than on one small piece of paper throughout the whole year. We can make powder paints out of flower, water and ink refills for pens, however it goes moldy and does not keep even in a sealed jar, also we are limited in colors (red, blue… purple).

-PAPER: We can occasionally buy colored paper here, but it is mighty expensive, and it is a rare occurrence that it is in stock. It would be WONDERFUL to have stacks of construction paper & different types of paper (like shiny stuff.. right now, there are some candies that are wrapped in shiny cellophane, and we’ve been using that when we can get them) but anything, if you ladies have some extra scrap booking paper lying around, we could definitely use that!

-Set of atlases: A dear friend, and fellow teacher - Georgina, is the Geography teacher for grades 5 and up. She has ONE atlas, and does a ton of mapwork, and has to photocopy that atlas so many times – it is such a waste of paper, and it gets destroyed and lost and we can’t photocopy that much to begin with anyhow.

-A set(s) of novels all grades: We have one set of novels (I think we have 9 of them) for the entire school – it is ‘Of Mice and Men’, so if any schools out there have some extra sets of novels, we would GLADLY have them. Just please send me the name first so I might be able to ask the English Teacher if that is fine. (This is actually such a dream… I don’t even want to think about it because even the possibility makes my heart jitter)

-Paintbrushes: ones with big handles, decent ones that young children can use and not completely destroy them after 5 minutes of use. Also once with decent brushes for the older ones to use.

-Containers: PLEASE pack everything in containers! Ah, everything (and I am VERY serious when I say everything) is caked in dust and dirt, and containers would help greatly in the prevention of having to throw out things like books out because they have become wrecked.

-Chalkboard Erasers: Right now we use odd pieces of foam/sponge… it’s used to make the mattresses and pillows out here. They DO work, but they take extra long to erase things, and make a noise that makes my insides shake. Oh how lovely it would be to have north American chalkboard erasers!

-Sponge cut outs: to dip into paint and make pictures… shapes

-*STUFF*: Ha, this is for those of you who have experience running a daycare, or are familiar with working with young children… like toys & games & supplies suitable for children ages 3-5. This ‘Stuff’ is very important, and it is extremely difficult for people who are giving funding to understand the importance of it unless they are the ones in there with the children to understand.

-Lego… who doesn’t love lego?

Fimo Clay: In term 4, Wendy (another teacher) and I are doing an after school extra curricular activity for the kids who are interested (right now I think we have 21 signed up). It is making jewelry and we can purchase beads here (unfortunately they are not cheap) but I would still like to use the material from here as much as we can, to encourage those students who wish to do this later on in their lives to, and they are able to use the skills they learnt with the material they have at their fingertips rather than being dependent on materials from elsewhere. However I would like to do a bit of a ‘treat’ with them near the end, where we can use FIMO clay, and they can create their own beads (A few years back I tried with plasticine, and playdough, but neither works even close to as good as fimo clay). Fimo clay can be pretty expensive (about $3/little bundle.. but if you shop around there is a good chance you may find some on sale. Michaels, Artist Emporium (On St. James), Colors (on Pembina). I know once I stocked up on Fimo Clay from Michaels, and I got them for 98 cents a piece from Michaels)

-Laminated Posters: *WORLD MAPS!!… many of those please, the alphabet, numbers, timestable, Grammer Rules, etc. Teachers, you would be the people to go to for this one.. what do you have up in your classroom? Please note: Do not give anything on cursive writing, as they have a different type of cursive writing here and any posters with our CDN French style cursive writing would disrupt the unity. **It is extremely important that these be laminated, please get them to my Mom ASAP so she can laminate them.

-Place Value blocks & Counters: for Maths, right now I have cut out pieces of paper and drawn and cut out units/ones, blocks of tens (but drawn out the units inside the tens) and the hundreds (with drawn out tens and units within).. and then the cubes are nonexistent. Some children are really struggling with this, It can be used for grades 1-5 and I think it helps for them to work with their hands.

-Puzzles: Easy & difficult

-Educational games: Some suggestions; scrabble, pick 2, Boggle

-NIV English bibles: VERY IMPORTANT THAT THEY ARE NIV… we are short of about 70 bibles.. but just putting it out there.. it’s impossible to find English bibles here.

-Films for ‘fun’ Days: Any DVD’s you might have at home, that perhaps you don’t watch anymore, or you would like to encourage your son or daughter to get into the spirit of giving by choosing one of their dvd’s to give to a child on the other side of the world : )

Like, The Lion King, Cars, Lilo & Stitch, any of the Fairy tales (Like beauty and the beast), Aladdin, Lady & the Tramp, Nemo

-English Educational Computer Games: Just this month we received 20 brand new laptops from France! Mr Mammy is the computer teacher, I KNOW he would really really appreciate some kind of English programs to help out… I don’t have any idea of the cost of the Magic School Bus computer games, but I remember at DTS/ELI… those were the games to play (I LOVE the space ones) Schools – this is another one for you, I do not know who is in charge of computers at DTS, LCI, ELI, or LBC, but if any of you have any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. Oh, just a heads up, the French keyboards are quite different from English keyboards, so please be aware of the typing games that show where your fingers go on the keyboard… make sense? I asked him if he could have anything at all what would he have, and he said 'POSTERS!' so he could show computers pictures or words or things that connect to the 'computer world' and how to use them. As for software, he said anything that has to do with; drawing, word processing, movie making (english definitely), GAMES (for kids & adults), typing programs, maintenance, etc.

-Paper Shredder: There is no recycling in this country in the sense that they have no buildings or places that do the recycling.. but the people of Madagascar do get my utmost respect in using every little thing until there is nothing left.. even if the garbage bins are overflowing… you can be sure that within the next couple of hours somebody will be by to pick out every little thing that might be created into something one might be able to use. HOWEVER, we throw out a truly atrocious amount of paper at the school, and I would like to keep all the paper in bins and then shred it and teach the children how to make paper, and then we can use that home made paper for class projects… and maybe even cards and then sell them… awesome fundraiser potential ; ) which ALSO can teach the children business skills, etc.. ah, so much good to come from a paper shredder! Maybe some of you people passionate about the environment (ahem.. Tenniel, Robyn…) might have some ideas on this one.

$ for things the following:

-SOCCER BALL(s) (right now some of the kids bring their own, but it would be so awesome of the school could have one so we know where it is at all times, and any class would be able to use it)

-MATERIAL: to cut and make flags or kind of jerseys for the kids to differentiate teams during P.E. or other activities.

-$250 <= the cost of an additional suitcase onboard international flights. This is dependent on the amount, size, and weight in supplies coming with my Mum. Personally, I believe $250 is well worth it to get the items requested for the school that we are unable to get out here, and if we were to order it and have it shipped it would cost much more (the cost of sending an envelope the size of a computer paper to Canada, is about $90… and then its’ not even guaranteed to reach its destination)

-A friend and fellow teacher (Jaco and his wife Ilca) have recently begun going out of the city to an extremely poor area, and feeding the people once a week. They have 3 people (Jaco, Ilca, and Naomi) that go on a regular basis. They hang out with the people and feed them a good meal. I wish so much that I could be a part of this, however they do this every Monday at 11AM… this is when I am teaching. I do plan on going on the break coming up (Oct 20^th), and am looking forward to it. But for now all I can do is pray, and put the word out there. I am sure $ would be very helpful in the purchase of food and any other necessities that may arise. Also, just a heads up, Jaco is from South Africa, but has been living and working out here for I think its 9 years… so he knows the language, the culture, etc… CHURCH (Faith-0-Rama.. you too!), this is especially for you. Ephesians 4 has been on my heart since my very first night in Antananarivo, it speaks about the Unity in the Body of Christ, and how we have One God, One Spirit, One Hope, One Love (… Any U2 fans?)… This is a wonderful way to bring together part of the body in Manitoba, and part of the body in Madagascar. I know you are probably all doing things with your money, and please do not misunderstand me in saying I believe this to be a more worthy cause than another that is perhaps on your heart. I just ask that you think about it. I have not mentioned anything to Jaco (pronounced EEE-AA-CKOOO), and have absolutely no plans on mentioning this to him, rather I would like to just give it to him if anything comes up… like ‘surprise! This tiny part of the Body 2 oceans away loves you and supports what you are doing’. I just ask that you think/pray about it, please and thank you.

-2 tuning forks – I don’t know what its’ called, but it’s a tiny metal thing that looks like a fork with only 2 prongs, and you tap it against something (ANYTHING) and it rings an ‘E’ note… excellent for tuning instruments, especially for areas in which electronics are hard to come by. (cost: I think they are less than $5 from Long & McQuade). I would like to give these to Mammy who is in charge of all the Music things that goes on with the school and church.

-Books: -Any decent books about Islam… But please ask me about this one, I’d prefer to learn more about from a non-bias point… does such a book exsist?

-Any good books… I’ve been doing a lot of ‘reading for fun’, and so I’d prefer nothing too ‘indepth’ unless it has to do with Islam. Heads up: i wrote this at midnight, yesturday - sunday evening.. this is 4 hours past my bedtime and i had waken up at 5:45 that morning (which is extra early for me) so i was incredibly tired, and i have not re-read/edited it in the least. but i remember being 'in the zone' as i was writing, so take what you wish. oh, we just had a wicked hail storm here, yeah.. in madagascar. it was neat. and so heres my entry - hope you enjoy!

Few people may know this, and few people who I think know this probably don’t actually know or remember. And why I am writing it in here-I have an idea as a prelude, which will most likely turn into a rambling like most of my spiels do. And so this the beginning, as I write this my soundtrack is Hawksley Workman’s ‘The Delicious Wolves’ and Workman’s ‘lover/fighter’

-The song ‘Do You Realize?’ by The Flaming Lips is the most romantic song of all time. I say this not as opinion, but as fact ; )

-Another fact which few of you may be unaware of, is in 1986 Madagascar ‘fell’ (how delicately put…) to the French, and was under French colonization until 1960, and has been an independent country now for almost 48 years.

Now here are some things I’d like to note that are neither fact or opinion (although I have a immense difficulty writing anything as a completely impartial piece, and my bias reigns heavy in everything from tiny adjectives to blown out cursing rants so please question that which I have written to find out what exactly it is that you yourself believe on some issues I may raise.. have a good time : ) And SO IT BEGINS:

2008, I have heard and no longer react to hearing stories of ‘silly’ lawsuits and as ‘silly’ as they are, they are facts and the reality in which I live; one suing McDonalds over serving coffee too hot, a lesbian couple going to court to try and get themselves a legal ‘recognized’ divorce when only 10 months previously they were fighting for their marriage to be ‘recognized’ in the eyes of the law, etc. I have become indifferent to the majority of lawsuits I hear and immediately pass judgment on.

I suppose some factors in becoming apathetic to these ‘facts’/situations is it has become the norm for myself as a white, educated, healthy, self-centered woman growing up in a financially stable loving family in the West.

Perhaps for some of you with similar upbringings, the norm may be; at 2AM we leave the bar scene, in a diverse of moods and thoughts and coherencies.. and wind up at one of the many 24 hour mass shopping stores such as Wal-Mart and pour our remaining change into a cheap dvd from their 2 for $10 bin to bring home and fall asleep to. Perhaps it has become the norm to put the majority of our time into getting the __?__ number of signatures needed for our petition to keep homosexual marriage illegal. Or perhaps it has become the norm to spend thousands of dollars on ‘beauty’ (ugh – I use this word ONLY to describe quickly, not because I believe it to be true ‘beauty’) supplies, hair dyes, and surgeries only to crave more. Or perhaps it has become the norm to spend tens of thousands of dollars, 4 years of our time, and countless social sacrifices to gain a piece of paper that has the word ‘degree’ printed across it, only to realize it is something you/i/we detest and return to school to pursue something that might just quench the thirst within. Or perhaps it has become the norm to see groups of ‘christians’ picketing at the funerals of our/our neighboring nation’s soldiers.

With all this becoming the norm for myself, I throw up my hands and laugh, for tears do nothing anymore as the more we keep pushing to be come self-sufficient, self-serving individuals, the more idiotic notions will become the ‘norm’ to be judged against man’s version of ‘justice. I know the power of man’s ‘justice’ has no power over true love, humility, and grace, but this is so far from my natural ‘norm’ I fail more often than not and my own idiotic tendencies blend in with the norms of the majority in our society.

I assume Antananarivo’s society holds a great number of young women who possess similar opinions as I, and although we share different norms, the facts are facts, and quite frequently the two mesh and make my deciphering morals increasingly difficult, I wonder how many are in the same boat.

-In 1810, Radama I (The king of Madagascar) outlawed foreign slave trade, however kept many local people in domestic slavery. And now we’re back to facts…

A little while ago a young girl in my class asked me if my family had slaves in Canada because her family had slaves at their home on the coast (At least this is what I understood from our conversation, my mind was a bit boggled at the time). I have now been in Madagascar for a little over a month, and although the class system is quite visible, it had not occurred to me that there were slaves as I just assumed slave trade was seen as abominable to every person who lived on the same planet as I. But I am learning little by little that the slave trade is very much active, more specifically the child sex slave market alike many other countries (side note: Did you know South Africa is trying to legalize prostitution in time for the world cup in 2010… cross your finger guys, we can go watch soccer right after we pick up a 12 year old to bang in a motel 8 and not have to fill guilty about it because its within the law!). I do not know where the ‘law’ stands on this (back to slave trade now) , and I am not saying it does not occur in my home country, however the facts remain that it is a current issue within this country I have come to know as ‘home’.

Another fact in this country I have recently learnt of; I come from a country where it is the norm for individuals who are arrested to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. This is something I never quite examined, or thought much about, until I was told that in Madagascar people who are arrested are found guilty until proven innocent. So, you could come here, say that I stole your watch and I would be put in jail possibly for years until somebody could prove that it wasn’t true.

It is the year 2008, and I have come to know many ‘facts’ I would rather I had not come to know, and I have come to recognize many norms that are far from norms in other parts of the world. However, the more facts and norms I learn of, the less I understand. However, I know a handful of truths in which I am not concerned about the norms or facts in which they fit. For one cannot possibly argue with absolutes : ) And this is the truth for myself at this point in time:

I love the area in which I was born into this world (Winnipeg, Manitoba!), I love hundreds of Canadian citizens some of who I respect and hold in great respect and have helped me out of countless situations my own selfishness and pride has gotten me stuck in. I adore the part of the Lord, God I have come to learn and encounter in that great land, and I am now also crazy about the part of notre Dieu I am learning about through the people, and this island. In Canada, or Madagascar, we share the same sky, the same moon, the same God, yet I see different pieces and there is still so much I long to know and revere. I am thirsty for His presence, and these facts and norms would normally have my heart in shambles but I have an unexplainable peace in knowing that there will be true justice one day, and my only duty is to Simply Love.

This piece was written with a ton of passion, and a longing to have my dear sister sit by me and hear my rant and roll her beautiful blue eyes, but all the while listening, which I appreciate more than I ever have said.

Homesick & Homage to Music

I assume many of you reading this may way to yourself ‘Why in the world is she writing this? What does this have to do with being in Madagascar? I want to read stories of mud huts and miracles…’ So let me say I am sorry that you may be disappointed in this post, but ‘Homesickness’ is a very big part of the reality of any foreigner being in a land they do not call ‘home’, and this is a way of my dealing with it.

It is difficult to me to integrate into mostly any social circle where the average age is above 16. Spending the majority of my time with ‘kids’ over the past couple of years whether it be at my last wonderful job (La Barrier Crossings School) or with youth in Landmark. I have grown accustom to being in a position of leadership. I have grown accustomed to being surrounded with children (some of who adore you and do not hesitate in showing you through physical touch or screaming your name until you give them attention). I have grown accustom to choosing my vocabulary carefully to lead to the quickest understanding between a child and myself. My mind is accustom to being constantly challenged in the way I am going to speak, because I want what I speak of to be appealing and challenging to the individual or group BUT always have truth at the forefront of what I speak (I know it can’t always be appealing… but it’s a lot easier to have somebody learn something when they don’t hate the method in which they are being taught). All this being said, I find great comfort and joy from a handful of individuals who are excluded from these beautiful children. I appreciate such persons, and hold them in high esteem. It’s around these friends (including my mother, father and sister) that I can be who I have to realize who I am at this old age of 22 : )

I enjoy ‘stupid’ movies (not like dumb and dumber.. I detest that movie) but Will Ferrell Movies, I love will Ferrell and his humor, it’s immature, sometimes sick, it just makes me laugh so much, also Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat – Kim and I have watched it countless times and every time we laugh. And I tried to watch it with my parents.. but they couldn’t quite see the humor and turned it off), my admiration for this type of humor many of said is evil or twisted, where I see Mr. Sasha Baron Cohen as absolutely brilliant, but would not recommend to kids). AND I enjoy depressing films (but not ‘Dancer in the Dark’ dark.. that just tears at my insides). This is something I am learning more that many people don’t particularily enjoy, and brings me to greater appreciation for my friends back home in Manitoba. I enjoy cheesy fantasy & Sci-fi movies too… like ‘Merlin’ with Kevin Costner : )

Whenever I have music on, I feel better than I did with it not being on. It doesn’t matter if I am eating, listening to a friend, teaching, thinking, I believe there is ALWAYS some type of music that will appeal to that mood (or the mood I desire to be in), or the situation. I enjoy many different types of music, but I enjoy sorrowful music and ‘angry sounding’ music a lot – two of which are not loved by a great number of people. I only say this because its around these few individuals who I love and admire that just understand that and don’t ask me to turn off the music or make fun of me.

At least I have my music. Almost every song on my computer or ipod (Thank you Spence!) holds a very specific memory; whether it be of a person, a place, an idea, or God. Occasionally in an e-mail or blog, I may post my current playlist – because I feel this says a lot about where I am at, at that point in time. This might be quite boring for many of you, but I am thankful that I have somewhere to write this, if for none other than to try and figure out what is going on in my mind and heart.

Now that you know this, here is a playlist for this past week:

Ben Harper – Excuse me Mr.: melodic, a bit ‘sick’ sounding. Its beautiful. ‘excuse me mr, wont you lend me your ear, or are you not only blind, but do you not hear? Is that not your oil in the sea, and pollution air? Excuse me mr, im a ‘mr.’ too…. Cause it’s a ‘mr.’ like you that puts the rest of us to shame.’ I know many wonderful men of all ages who live an admirable life, and I don’t mean the money the make or their careers, but the way they interact with children, how they spend their ‘free time’ (if they have any of it!), how they ‘love’, and I know a great deal of men who I would not hesitate to call pricks and forbid my dear sister to ever have anything to do with any of them.

Elton John – Tiny Dancer: Oh how I simply ADORE this song! I imagine turning into a tiny fairy ballerina and flying above where I am, out in the city or country and just making people happy by being a ballerina fairy. It reminds me of Santa Monica last fall with Kim (Landmark) and Amanda (Regina) and Mercy (Kenya/L.A.)… Walking down Santa Monica Boulevard on our way to find some ‘halloween’ fun in our quick costumes and Mercy screaming at strangers cause that’s how she interpreted Halloween ‘fun’. It was ‘pee your pants’ kind of funny. For some reason this song also reminds me of the Phyllis & Dennis Reimer family – why I’m not too sure; perhaps its that the level of musical talent in that family is astounding… and Elton john’s music blows my mind also : )

Comeback kid – Wake the Dead: ‘You said, you said, you said, this time was gonna be different. Wake! Up! The! Dead! Stop living under the weight of your regrets’ I am listening to this song right now, it’s a good Saturday morning song, makes me ready to ‘take on the day’. It reminds me of many people, and many situations.

Jorane – Priere: One French lady with her cello. It is sullen, peaceful, sorrowful, cry to God to be here please, to please be here. That’s my interpretation. I don’t know if there are any words or just vocal sounds, I think just vocal sounds, but it’s beautiful.

Nicole C. Mullins – When I call on Jesus: The epic sounding beginning is something that makes me ‘chuckle’ but then it stops and goes into a message full of hope, not to mention this lady has a beautiful voice. It makes me feel like a beautiful lady: ) “I’m so very ordinary, nothing very special on my own. Oh I have never walked on water and I have never calmed a storm. Sometimes im hiding away from the madness around me like a child whose afraid of the dark but when I call on Jesus all things are possible, I can mount on eagles and soar...”

The Unseen Guest – Listen My Son: If any of you are a fan of Blues, I highly suggest you find this song and listen to it. It’s chill, it soothes my soul, and makes me feel good at whatever place I’m in, I feel human and just that.

Tupac & Elton John – Ghetto Gospel: I could write all of the lyrics in this piece because they are just THAT good, but I’ll only post part on it, but I would encourage you that if you look into any of these songs… check out this one. “I make mistakes, I learn from every one and when it’s said it done, I bet this brother be a better one. If I upset you, don’t stress… Never forget, that God hasn’t finished with me yet. I feel his hand on my brain, when I write rhymes I go blind and let the Lord do His thing. But am I less holy, cause I choose to puff a blunt and drink a beer with my homies? Before we find world peace, we gotta find peace in the war on the streets…My Ghetto Gospel.” I think every church should take this song and plan an entire service around it, I am serious. I have many ideas. The image of Tupac and Elton John at a church pulpit preaching this song, ah what a service that could be. I think this is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time, it’s just that good.

The classrooms at Vision Valley School do not have walls that go all the way up to the ceiling, and the roof is tin, so sound travels far. For this reason I do not play music very often, and when I do, it is very quiet. The music is a treat for the kids, and if there is even ONE sound in the classroom, the music gets turned off. I am serious about it, so the kids are absolutely silent when the music is on (sometimes it’s a really nice break). HOWEVER, every time Timbaland & One Republic’s ‘Apologize’ I begin to hear a very quite humming, and then it builds up to the chorus and the entire class is singing in their cute accented English ‘ITS TOO LATE TO APOLOGIZE’, I pretend I don’t hear... but its so loud I am SURE the classrooms surrounding me are listening to the grade 4’s covering Timbaland : )

This week:

-It has been a wonderful week of school. I am getting to know my students and some of their families a little bit more.

-I am learning to accept this slow procedure of getting organized in the classroom and planning, so I don’t feel AS lost in this ‘position’ : )

-We are almost finished our African Dance Masks! Hopefully to be done this week, and I will post pictures.

-I cut my hair really short. It wasn’t totally spontaneous (I had been thinking about it since I arrived when I realized we had a bathtub but now shower and I’d need to wash my curly longish hair either in the bathtub or the sink). But I just got sick of the dirt stuck in my hair so I chopped it all off a couple of days ago. My mum and I probably look like twins now : )

-I am kind of under ‘house arrest’… problems with my visa, but I won’t write about it on the Internet. If you have questions, feel free to email.

-Not that I have a super exciting life outside of the house, but I actually haven’t been out of the house other than to go to school. So all of this weeks happenings have occurred in only one or the other… if you’re wondering why this all sounds quite ‘boring’.

-Yesterday Georgina stayed home with me (Usually they go out on Friday nights into town to go to the Analakeyli market and then go for supper). But Georgina stayed with me at home (yay!) and we made pizza, salad, and drank $3 wine – yum.

-I made some ‘art projects’ with chalk and permanent markers and watercolor

-I stuck some keychains through my ears. (You may be able to tell I was beginning to feel a bit useless and unproductive some days, and so I figured what better way to be useful and productive than to stick keychains through my ears. It was not an easy task). Honestly though, I had time to do more planning and organizing for school, and that is good/needed.

I am one tiny puzzle piece, and this little piece right now is learning a whole whack load of humility.

Chapter 1 - short stories and other nick nacks

September 11^th has come and gone, but I have a lull of sadness hanging over my heart – I would think being so far from home, and actually so far from NY at the time of the towers collapsing it wouldn’t keep coming up in my mind. But this year, more so than in the past, perhaps it is because I can’t flip on the television and see some kind of tribute to the thousands of people who died on that day. I hurt for you New York.

The following is a collaboration of my very own true short stories, thus beginning Chapter One of Lisa’s Short Story Collaboration. Please feel free to skim, jump, joke, jolt (!?) at your convenience. Please note, the stories appear in chronological order, and only seem to decrease in positives as they go on, but I am confident there are many more countless joys to be had.

Stupid Camera.

As many of you may know, I own a digital Kodak camera, I have had it for about three years – it is a wonderful camera when it works, however, the amount of times I have gone for it to use it and it NOT turning on, far exceeds the number of times it has been able to work when I want to use it. No matter what batteries, how charged, or brand new it is.. it really doesn’t matter, it has a mind of it’s own : ( Fortunately, I am not a person who feels the desire to document my daily events with photographs. However, there are the odd times when I would like to do a project, or I want to take photos of somebody that I love who I might see for a long time – that is when I want to use a camera. And all this ‘jibber jabber’ (kudos to the judge in Boston Legal Season 2… my new favorite (and only) show thanks to Josh, the internet, and my laptop) simply introduces my first short story:

The first week of school I told the kids I would be taking photos of them individually – one nice one, and one goofy one, so they had to practice their faces. Well school began on a Wednesday, and on Wednesday my camera decided that all throughout the day it really didn’t want to work. On Thursday, my camera decided that all throughout the day it didn’t want to work (Even though it had brand new batteries, and I had brought along brand new fully charged batteries.. just in case). On Friday I just decided ‘well, we are going to go outside.. and this camera IS going to work, it’s GOT to.’.. and it didn’t. The kids were all lined up all 16 of them (2 were missing), with their goofy faces ready, laughing and jibber-jabbering. And no matter what we did the camera just was NOT going to work. So I said ‘guys, lets pray for this camera, that it would stop being stupid, so that we can take photos of one another’. We then all got around the camera (some of them thinking this is the funniest thing in the world.. praying for a camera to work?!?) and a handful of kids and myself prayed out loud that God would please let this camera work so we could do this project together. And then, the camera turned on.

I heard one of the kids say it was a miracle.

Convulsing Pig

One of my days walking to school, I was ‘in the zone’, and not paying much attention to anyone or anything around me. Here in Antananarivo, the roads are very narrow, and at the sides of the road they have a straight trough/ditch about a foot and a half wide, and about 4 feet deep (I think.. I’ve never seen the bottom – so I don’t actually know) , it is full of garbage, pee, sewage, etc Well I was walking near the side of one of those ditches, and I could tell (with my ‘thank you God’ peripheral vision) that one of those little carts pulled by a man was coming up beside me, quite close, so I just put my hand on the cart as he jogged past, but to my surprise all of a sudden I was not touching slivers of wood on the side of the card, but rather something kind of hairy… so I looked and there was the biggest pig I’ve ever seen! Not only was this Pig HUGE, but he was convulsing, and shaking, and stuff was going out of this mouth, and out of his butt. I was so grossed out and shocked and forget where I was and almost fell into the sewage trough (man, what a sight that would have been.. one of the funny white girls beside a convulsing pig, waist deep in sewage). Last scene of the story: I was stratteling the trough, and the 3 Malagasy men with the cart got a good laugh, with the pig still convulsing and it’s innards coming out every which way. I will no longer eat pork, no matter where I am in the world.

The One that Almost Got Away

The Grade 4 class at Vision Valley is doing their first term theme of Africa, meaning geography, history, health, etc. (… anything I desire to put into a curriculum reflecting Africa in one way or another). Wednesday, Periods 3 and 4, I teach grade 4 Art. Every project we have begun so far in THEME has been a piece of the puzzle that we will be able to enjoy at the end of the term which will conclude with a big grade 4 African party, which will consist of day of African animal presentations, traditional dance (Reflecting of the Zulu tribe dances.. and then some ‘free dance) with our African masks, African food, African geography test : ) After our loads of African English story comprehension tests, work sheets, and research.. this should be all quite refreshing. One of the things to prepare for this day is to create our African masks out of paper mache, balloons, cardboard, home made flour paint, dye, and fabric (Realistically, I believe it will take about 6 double period Art lessons to complete this project). Anyhow, the first class I brought 24 balloons, the kids each had one balloons to do their paper mache with, some of the balloons popped.. many of the balloons popped. We ran out of balloons, one of the kids said ‘Ms Lisa, lets ask God to put a balloon in your pocket’ – we did.. then I pulled out my pockets, and there was a balloon in one of them (I think I maybe just put it in there not thinking) – but my oh my was there ever a lot of rejoicing! But then… another balloon popped, and I was super frustrated cause we had no balloons left, then the kids were like ‘ms lisa ms lisa lets just ask God to put another balloon in our pockets!’.. and I thought ah, this is just getting silly, but I said ‘okay’ but said that I couldn’t pray (cause I didn’t really believe it)… after that all the kids looked in their pockets… and nothing. A couple of minutes went by, and out of nowhere I just got really excited and asked Filamatra (super tiny, super funny, kind of eccentric, beautiful Malagasy kid) to check his pockets.. and to the amazement of him AND myself.. he pulled out a yellow balloon : ) AHH we were all so happy, everything was going wonderful – we were getting all messy with glue goop outside on a gorgeous day. However, near the end of the day Anna’s balloon blew up and over the high brick wall. (Anna is a witty, a bit of a perfectionist, very sweet,l beautiful Chinese girl). I sighed, and we were all devasted, seriously, the kids just stopped doing anything.. but then, I ran (I have an awkward run).. I ran as fast as I could, Anna followed me, I ran all the way around to the opening in the wall and back around to where the balloon floated over the wall, I ran across the soccer field, and I saw the balloon high in the air and I ran like my life depended on it. Slowly, the balloon, began to come down, and nestled into a bush of thorns, where it stayed in one piece. I carefully picked up and handed it to Anna, we were so happy. We walked for 5 minutes back to the places were the kids were inside the school compound. We wanted to try and play a trick on them and pretend like we didn’t find it – but we couldn’t keep the grins off of our faces, and the kids were so happy they jumped and shouted, and we all hugged – it was funny and a great day. I know it shouldn’t be about me, but I felt like such a hero.

One of the expectations of myself and the other teachers on behalf of the ‘leadership’ at Vision Valley School is to arrive at 7:30AM (or before) as classes begin promptly at 7:50 and they like to open up in prayer and get a few announcements out there. I joyfully abide by this rule 100% of the time even though I would not consider myself to be a ‘morning person’ by any stretch of the imagination. However, a few days back I woke up in a bed of sweat even before my alarm went off at 6AM. I lay there with my cup of hot tea in my hot bed and could hear the girls getting up and ready for the day that lay ahead. I felt like cursing any being I might come into contact with, and this was a moment that I might even dare say was a God forsaken morning. I felt ugly, bitter, angry, tired, frustrated. I do not know why (I am definitely not pregnant). I didn’t want to leave my room because I knew I would be far from pleasant with whichever room mate I’d have encountered first. Consequently.. I stayed in my bed almost the whole morning, until I heard the jingle of the keys and they said they’d be going, and I yelled ‘okay’… I just waited a few minutes and then I was prepared to go out and walk the 15ish minute walk to school alone. However, with my bag packed, and sandals ready to go, I could not find my keys, and for our house you need the keys to get in, AND out of the house, because you lock the big gate from the outside as well as the inside with a key- after tearing apart my very clean room (honestly always clean.. just cause I’m terrified of rats or some kind of insect infestation otherwise) and my bag and looking everywhere I could possibly think of, I gave up on trying to find my keys. So I thought I would just phone one of the girls and ask them to come back and unlock me from my house, but ALAS.. I had no ‘talk time’ so I was unable to make any calls or txts at all. I began to mildly panic.. how long would it be until somebody came to look for me? What would happen with my class? I decided I would figure out a way to hop the fence. Now I live in a house made out of cement and bricks. I have a wall/fence around my house made off concrete, and on some parts of the fence there are pieces of broken glass on the top, and on other parts there are spears of iron pointing high into the sky (not that this prohibits people from coming into a garage and stealing various items of clothing that are drying in there). The lowest part in the fence/wall is about 6 feet from the inside, and about 12 feet from the outside.. I figured it was my best bet… even if I suffered a broken ankle, I figured it’d be a great adventure and I was all of a sudden very excited at this idea. So I went inside to get changed, and put on my man cargo pants that are far too big for me but I feel tough in them, and a tank top. I wove my arms in my windmills, and I raced toward the fence. I grabbed the iron bars and pulled myself along with my sad attempt at a ‘running start’ up the wall (Lisa… climbing a wall? ... Lisa climbing anything?) I got to stand at the top, but only for a few seconds until my foot slipped and my face came falling down onto one of the spikes and I impaled my chin. I was stunned, my teeth started chattering, and I felt the blood running. I don’t really know what happened next, my hands were bloody and I couldn’t really see what the extent of the damage was cause there was just a bunch of blood on my face. I was not excited anymore. I sat on my bed with my bloody tissues not doing anything, not thinking anything, hoping to avoid the tears of self-pity. So, I did what I usually do when I realize I need to quit trying to be so self-reliant, I prayed. Within 5 seconds, Sarah ran back into the house (this is about 15 minutes after she left). She shouted in between trying to catch her breath “YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR KEYS!” And I left with her to school. Apparently Georgina (other room-mate) had just said out of nowhere ‘Lisa doesn’t have any keys’.. now nobody knew this – I think God told her. And I made it school, with a bleeding chin, a broken ego, and a horrible attitude (I blame the incident entirely on the French who decided to colonize Madagascar way back when, and it’s because of them that the foreigners live in houses with spikey fences out of fear of the people’s land and culture they took over… this is a funny joke, I hope it may bring a smile to your face). And thus began the day of the ‘Je Comprends Pas’ tears.

Wednesday was a pretty brutal day. I was impatient, it began in the morning, and just escalated. There is one child on the class who I am 99% sure has ADHD, and he’s a really sweet kid, and everything he does is so dramatic, and bold, and in your face.. and it’s usually just really funny, but he was trying to run up the walls and just moving so much it made me nauseous. I felt like I couldn’t help anyone to understand. I felt like I ran out of ideas, and nobody understood anything I was trying to say. They didn’t understand ‘rounding off’, and tried everything I could find in ‘the books’, all the different teaching methods to go along with the seven different ways people learn. I also had an extra long day, because I don’t have any prep/spare periods because I teach grade 8 a double period of art that day (we’re doing inner self portrait right now). And also I do extra lessons after classes are done – and with 3 kids – it took us a whole hour to discuss 3 pages of a 15 pages story… it seems that they didn’t understand a thing, and I felt like I was just telling them the story over again pretty much sentence by sentence, deciphering the meaning of every third word. It seems hopeless. I also have a student in the class who knows about 5 English words (everything else is in French or Malagasy), and so that makes every single subject such a huge issue, she just stares at me blankly, and you may be asking why don’t I just translate for her – well I’ve been reading quite a lot of literature on ‘teaching English as a second language’ and it seems as if when you speak in their tongue, it takes more than double as long for them to learn English : ( Also, I just don’t have time to make up special lessons while the rest of the kids are doing the standard grade 4 English work. How many kids just say ‘Je comprends pas’, or ‘I don’t understand’.. it makes me want to ‘lash out irrationally’ (kudos to Tim Allen’s ‘The Santa Clause’). To top it all off I am still horribly unorganized, and am really planning one day at a time, and have struggling with getting it together and putting together a curriculum with the resources at my fingertips. Sarah came in to ask me how my day was, and I just cried. My day sucked.

Thursday was a new day, and went much better.

Friday was a fresh day, and went even better.

Saturday Night Church.

I love Vision Valley Church, and last week we had a Family Day, and normally I would have loved it, but I found myself hiding out in the back where nobody would find me where I cold be alone and read and write and think. I miss my church, I miss the genuine greetings from people that I know, I miss Kiah, Jesse, Kelly, Walker, EEEvon, Aaron, Josh, and a whole slew of people whose awesomeness far exceeds any words I could put on here.. I miss the ongoing jokes about Diesel and I getting married. I miss Jenny, Robyn, and Cyndy. I miss Les’s hugs. I miss Mashawn (and is rad hair) and Joe playing with the kids after church. I miss seeing Gil standing at the back of the church, with a good high five. I miss Sean’s band’s music. I miss having close to NO idea how the service would look from week to week, I love the diversity, and I miss that a whole lot. I miss feeling like I was part of something that was truly acting out what we literally preached. I miss my home church. The frustrations & challenges, and the countless joys & encouragers - I miss Saturday Night Church. Writing this down, I think I am realizing that SNC may be the one thing (other than to my family) have actually made a commitment to (ahhh, I think I’m growing up!).

New This Week in Tana:

-The Raining has begun, and the mosquitos are out.

-I am battling an on again off again fever, yesterday I changed shirts 4 times because I sweat so much (even though it’s still not that warm here).

-I began a Beth Moore Bible Study, something about the “Fruits of the Spirit”, this is a new experience for me, and I am quite out of my comfort zone.

-I met a passionate U.S. REPUBLICAN.

Monday:

I am at Jocelyn's house, Josh is in South Africa. Georgina, Sarah, Colleen are here as well... we are all on a computer (woohoo wireless internet!!)

Last week was the first full week of school. I was overwhelmed, stressed out, unorganized, a mess, i was a mess, but smiled all day long.

I really enjoy getting to know my kids, all 18 of them... so funny, oh my goodness are they funny! this morning we had a sharing circle, it was wonderful.

there is one boy in the class, a bit of an odd kid, just breaks out in dance everynow and then, for no reason. i'm not sure how to respond; laugh? tell him to sit down? ignore?

every time, i am just so i don't even know.. i just love it, i just smile and let him dance. yet, i don't have an issue with discipline, cause i just speak very quietly to the kid infront of everybody and tell him/her that they are being very rude, and they need to stop.. and that's really it, if it continues, i just tell them to get out of the class and give them a pile of work. it seems to work so far.

i began extra lessons today, after school for a handful of students. it makes for a very long day. i am also the art teacher for a couple of grades (double periods each time).. so that takes away from my 'prep/spare' periods, which is fine.. it just makes for a long day thats all. it's relaxing for me to do art - i just end up having lots to do afterwards (like correcting and preparing and things).

i enjoy hanging out with kids... more than 'teaching' a big group such a broad range of things. I truly miss faith-o-rama, and i truly miss flatland. i miss some individuals in those groups, i miss that feeling of being able to hang out with somebody without being in a position of authority. i hope being a 'teacher' doesn't 'taint' that part of me that is able to do that.

supper is ready, this isn't a very inspiring writing hey? sorry, i actually haven't made the time to write something throughout this past week/weekend, but i will make it a priority in the next couple of days so that i can have something of more substance.

My First Week of Teaching!!!

My First Week of Teaching.

Hello hello my dear wonderful friends & family!

I think I may have started off the last entry like this, but I have not yet lessened my appreciation for my old faithful laptop nor the world wide web! It’s is so nice to have a medium in which I can communicate with you. Here I am in my dark tiny bedroom at 7 in the morning on a Saturday. Jocelyn gave me some very thick curtains she wasn’t using – so they help keep my room dark.. and I get to sleep in all the way to 7 on the weekends! : ) Usually I get up at 6:15, and leave for work/school between 7 & 7:15.

I am listening to Celine Dion’s Christmas album (My dear sister Catherine… I am surrounded by houses that give music lessons.. seriously there are 3 within 50 feet.. and APPARENTLY quite often they sing to Celine Dion! Exciting hey?) I try not to think about the fact that I will not be seeing Celine this October in Winnipeg with Catherine, because as silly as it may sound, one of my dreams is to see Celine Dion WITH CATHERINE!! And wow, just thinking of it I am laughing!

Let me fill you in on this past week: If you are uninterested in my ‘teaching’ lore and follies I invite to please skip through this part as it might be a bit of a bore – but I will try not to drag it on too long.

Monday = Teacher’s meeting.
I met all the teachers/staff of the school. We went over rules & policies, then I organized the classroom.. it is still a brutal mess with hundreds of books in cardboard boxes at the back of the classroom.
Tuesday = Stationary Day
Out here the kids bring LOTS of things that are not only for themselves, but for all the Art supplies in the school, and things for the Office/administration. For example one child would bring 8 scribblers, pens, marks, dictionaries, etc. but they would ALSO bring 12 rolls of toilet paper, 6 boxes of Kleenex, a big thing of computer paper, poster board, glitter, blue ink/dye, thick packing tape… and so the list goes on. Because there is so much stuff, the students come with their parents to bring everything to the classroom – where I go through the checklist and make sure they have everything, then semi-organize it. I got to meet many of the parents, and most of the children, it was exhilarating.
Wednesday = 1st Teaching Day!
Lisa Obirek says: “Good morning beautiful children!”
Grade 4’s say: “Good morning Ms Lisa” (Which, for us Canadians sounds like… ‘Gouude mowneeng meees leeza’) ah, it’s priceless.

okay, continuing on Wednesday – good day, mostly just organized ourselves (labeled books, go over rules, etc).. had a ‘sharing circle’ : )

In the grade 4 classroom we have 3 rules:
1- Love Vision Valley
2- Love Each Other
3- Love Yourself
Then we discussed what each of them means, and how we do that, it was nice.

Thursday: did a bunch of math – it’s a nice feeling to introduce a concept (for example – Place Value) and see the children learn it.. going from never hearing it.. to being able to answer questions about it – its nice : )

Friday: the day I realized I’m in way over my head. …..
Most of the kids in my class speak decent English (one new girl – doesn’t speak a word) but the comprehension level when reading I so low –and yet, because this is an English school – we are to ‘grade’ them according to the standard set by the school.. which is as if English were their mother tongue : ( … not one of these kids have English in their homes as they main spoken language – it’s actually quite beautiful the diversity in languages – I learnt a little bit of punjabe from some of the kids on Friday..
I had tears in my eyes when it clicked about the comprehension.. I mean, they read a sentence out of their grade 4 American text books and are struggling with each word.. so by the time they get to the end of the sentence – they have successfully read through the words, and they might understand the word – but definitely not the sentence. .. it is frustrating, and to be honest – really depressing. They want to prepare the children to be able to handle English university classes.

I have written a rant titled ‘O Mighty English – I serve only you’.. but it’s full of bitterness and judgment, it’s a bit funny but in a far from uplifting way. I tell you this only because that was my biggest quandary this week and the way I am dealing about it is my venting to my computer screen.

I love these kids!

Side note: Kidnapping is quite an issue here – I was told that one of the girls in my class has been kidnapped before… apparently it happens quite frequently – usually amongst the wealthy Indian families – and they hold the kids for a ransom. However, it’s not usually brutal violence, and 90% of the kids get returned home. Another kid in the school – her dad has been kidnapped TWICE – crazy eh?

Yesterday was Saturday – what a wonderful day! I slept in til 7 and wrote this and read so much! I read Francine Rivers’ first book of that triology she wrote about the Hebrew girl in roman times – ah I cried, and I really REALLY want to find the second book so I can read that this evening.

ALSO, Georgina (house mate/v.v. teacher/friend) and I went walking in some place I had never been before to try and find some shirts for me – I needed to have some long sleeved shirts for school – I have many Muslum students, and their parents as well (like head and sometimes face covered) so I just feel much more comfortable being more covered.. there are so many ‘used clothing’ places here – I really like it. I think people like us Canadians ship clothing over here like the stuff we don’t want – but then they need and want things other than these clothes so they sell them on the side of the road and then people like me buy them : ) and if any of you have shipped over clothing to Madagascar… thank you – maybe I am wearing one of your old shirts : )

After that we picked up some Madagascarian (is that a word?) chocolate, some THB (Three horse beer) FRESH, and Georgina bought a pirated movie – Sleepwalker.. oh my what a wonderful evening – us 4 girls in the house, watching an English dvd, drinking fresh, and eating chocolate. It was the most ‘chill’ its been since I arrived. (I taught the grade 4’s the meaning of the world ‘chill’ this week.. sometimes I say ‘okay guys its time to chill’.. and then they kind of slouch and pretend to be half asleep.. its funny AND they stop talking – bonus). I did a good chunk of prep work for school yesterday, and I’m still not nearly prepared enough.

Our First theme in this class will be Africa. This means our History, Geography, Science, Health.. it will all be related somehow to Africa – it is such a joy to research and prepare for this. I worked on that for many hours yesterday, and as soon as I have posted this – I will continue to do more work on it.

Hey for those of you that pray and read this – I would really appreciate prayer for God to give me wisdom and the direction when deciding how to approach this English Comprehension issue, apparently this is quite an issue in all of the grades, however I do not have any previous knowledge of how do this, and I’m reading a whole bunch and listening to advice.. but I still feel like I’m not doing enough. They have said many times they are so thankful that I have come and so on, and they know I do not have a teaching degree – and I will (and AM) working so much on preparing and learning, and trying to be wise in every decision – but I’m just in a bit of a down place right now – I am at peace.. but am feeling a bit lost in the position of ‘teacher’.

Barefoot Babe in Old Market Square

Ah my to my dear Reader(s)!

I sit here with a huge grin on my face as i am sitting in Jocelyn's house using their wonderful North American Keyboard and relatively quick internet connection - i feel as if i have just entered some secret world where i can be right there with you - ah the internet is a wondrous thing in my eyes.

I have actually an entire blog written up at my place on my laptop - but i was not expecting to come here today (to J to the third's) so i did not save it : ( so i'll do my best to quickly fill you in.

The other day I went to a pavillion market (there are some cobble stone streets and it reminds me of Old Market Square in The Exchange District - Winnipeg) in the middle of the city with 3 women (Sarah, Colleen, Mbola - principal at vision valley) . After Colleen and Mbola had finished the 40 minute adventure of finding and bargaining 20 binders we left the market for some late supper. We were headed to the Korean place which i hear about on a daily basis because of how unbelieveably delicious it is, and to their shock and disappointment it was closed : ( So, we headed towards some other little side street for about 10 minutes, and this little girl - about 4 years old with no shoes came up to me with a huge smile (and of COURSE i smiled back and just wanted to pick her up and swing her around!) and i smiled and she held out her hand and walked right beside me, this barefoot babe, with an open palm saying something in Malagasy that was some sort of plea for money. I couldn't look at her anymore - and i walked into our nice restaurant (some tasty Mexican place) and she remained outside in the dark all alone with no shoes.

I did not give her a penny. I did not give her a even a word in a language she would understand. I gave her an honest smile, which later turned into a 'right now im so confused, right now i wish i wasnt born with so much priviledge, and i wish i didnt feel so guilty' smile.

I sat down in the restaurant, and ate my chicken fahitas and drank my .. i dont know what it's called.. but it's beer mixed with sprite (even though i don't like beer - it was very tasty). I felt very strange, and very horrible. This is the first time in my life that I walked away with money in my pocket - and i walked away without having a conversation - or sharing a meal.

Giving people money has been the topic of MANY conversations between friends and i - and i say do what you can. i have been told - but there are thousands of them - millions even - if we were to give something to that little barefoot babe - they all would come running and you would become like them.

The thing is, sometimes, quite often, i wish that i was 'like them'. Maybe this just sounds really foolish - like i don't know what i'm saying, or i have no idea what it is that would all entail. But it is something that hits my heart tenfold and i can't shake it that i can't do nothing.

I am not going to say how i view this - we should all view it like this - but i think we should be constantly re-examining why we approach situations such as these the way we do. Cause yeah, maybe that little girl would go and give it to some big ass pimp, or maybe she would give it to her mum so she could buy some potatoes and it would only feed them for that one meal and then again tomorrow she would beg, or maybe it would keep her mother from selling her out for the night, or maybe it would i dont know.. maybe it would be better than doing nothing at all.

I write this without having drawn any kind of conclusion about it, i do not want any kind of sympathetic messages please, or 'lisa you cant change the world' messages.. no thank you i will listen, but i simply believe that there is an honest love than has, does, and will continue to change lives, and as one life is changed the entire world is changed - so yes, i do want to be involved in this beautiful adventure of changing the world through love, and if you don't to, thats your business.. but don't tell me it's not possible, because i myself have been changed through the unconditional love of another.

but i would appreciate wisdom.

ah, now how to transition into a myriad of other things, how about i draw a line, and that will suffice -yes?

-i take baths, cause we don't have a showerhead. i don't particularily enjoy bathing in my own Malagasy filth - but perhaps it will grow on me (hahaha.. literally!)

-georgina (housemate) bakes.. often, she is a wonderful baker and her housemates get to be the recipent of so many delicious things like caramel cupcakes, or some foreign south african tea biscuit

-i have a teacher's meeting tomorrow - monday. and then on tuesday is 'stationary day' when all the kids bring their school supplies and then leave. and then wednesday the KIDS ARRIVE!

-i am very excited to meet the kids and the year started with them. I am excited to get to try and figure out the strengths and weaknesses of all 18 of them.. i have the biggest class in the school : S

-it has only been 1 week and 1 day since my arrival here, and even though it has only been about 5 days since i last saw the Pletts of Madagascar (isn't it so funny.. that i don't have to say which ones?!?!) i found myself really wanting to be with them these couple of days, just to i don't know hear the same accent, or share with them about what i have been encountering, or just having Judah sit on my lap and say funny things. i will definitely appreciate them more and more as the year goes on.

-our toilet in the bathroom doesn't have a toilet seat - it's awkward.

-Since my arrival here last Saturday i have completed reading Picture of Dorian Grey, Started and completed The Great Gatsby, and Started and completed The Shack... now for my next book

-today i met a guy - tommy who is from Chicago.. and he is heading to Mufulira, Zambia in about 1 week.. and he was in Mufulira at the EXACT same time I was there 2 years ago!!! wow - for those of you who understand how incredibly strange and almost impossible this is.. i hope it's blowing your mind like it did for me : )

-i should post some picture eh? unfortunately my camera is at my house, and i only have photos of the horse mural on the bathroom stalls in paris.. and a whole bunch of Judah playing in my suitcase. i know i said i'd try and take photos, but honestly, i know people want picture of the environment, and that would mean me taking pictures of strangers, and just don't feel like it's right at this point in time.. perhaps soon : ) i'll take photos of the school, and my class, and my house and so on for you and put them up here!

so this computer is quite different than what i am used to . different buttons everywhere - in advance i tell you this because i will not spend time correcting the spelling or punctuation bits _ so you enlish grammer snobs better just hang in there!

august 17 _ day 3_in antananarivo, madagascar;
write not in complete sentences because i am so frustrated at this internet connection; slow speed, and different keys i could spit, spit alot, all over carpet;

here we go;
i am so happy_ i was born to do this, be here, love this at this moment, i love the smell, the colors, the people, the food, the public transit, even the horrible gutter sewer pee rat smell i love, i love the vision valley school, i love the weather, i love the hills; the roads; my new home, my beautiful housemates (sarah, georgina, colleen)

this is community living _ eat together, work together, so much sharing (ideal for me _ i love sharing so much!)
apparently a lady comes once a week to clean the house and everybody pitches in to pay her _ i am SO THANKFUL for that!

vision valley church is held in the same as the school that i will be working in (classes begin next week _ wednesday) the church is very similar to the vineyard and saturday night church _ i could write so much about it but will save that for when i can go to joce,s and use their sweet internet connection and keyboard.

there has been a change in plans... they are still in need of a grade 4 teacher, and because that is a wee bit more essential than an art teacher - that is what i will be doing! i am so excited! if you are laughing just have a little faith i am sure there will be a great many challenges - but theyre just going to be some funny stories and great learning experiences in the end! i am so thankfu that i will be with one group of kids the whole time _ yay _ better chance to build relationships.

fruit and veggies are rediculous cheap _ all organic! woohoo!!!

i speak french everywhere - huge asset here!

it is much cleaner than i expected, not near as much visible extreme poverty as i expected

i feel very safe

i go to school tomorrow - and get to figure out just what i,ve gotten myself into!

the house i live in is right in the city on a busy street among so many people _ i just love it so very very much

i went to the market yesturday with jocelyn and judah _ im going to learn malagasy with the girls from a lady at the school.
